First Descent of Hullu Poro and Ukkonen - Krister Furnes Kopala
A few years back, my good friend Eivind Aanesen saw a picture of this beautiful mountain. He‘s been dreaming of riding it ever since. With the deep and fairly safe snowpack in Northern Norway this year, we decided it was time to give it a try.
On our first attempt, we camped below the face to climb and ride the lookers right couloir early the next day. Unfortunately, the sun was too strong and snow had already started to fall down the couloir. We changed our plans and went for the lookers left couloir later in the day when it was shaded.
Even though it wasn’t our original plan, it turned out to be an epic run:
We returned a few days later and started hiking in the middle of the night, hoping to ski the first planned line in morning light. However, a bad feeling prompted us to turn around two hours into the hike.
The third attempt was a success. We boot packed a different couloir and rappelled into the line from the top. The snow in the upper section of the couloir was perfect and the remainder of the descent was steep and technical.
We named the left and right couloirs Hullu Poro and Ukkonen.
